There’s probably no ghosts in your bathroom, but that doesn’t mean nothing is lurking in your cabinets... Let's do a quick audit and uncover the secrets hiding behind closed doors.
What You Might Find (And What To Question)
Toilet Paper
Open the cupboard. How many rolls are stacked there? Here's what to think about:
- What are these rolls actually made from?
- How often are you buying toilet roll, and how much are you spending per year on it alone?
- Are there forever chemicals in that toilet paper?
- Could your toilet paper be affecting your skin?
- Are you getting good value for money?
Wet Wipes & Cotton Buds
Ask yourself:
- Are your wipes truly "flushable"? (Hint: no. The general advice is to only flush the 3 Ps: pee, poo and paper! Read more)
- Do they contain plastic? Microplastics?
- How many do you go through per month?
Nappies & Period Products
If you've got small kids or menstruate, these are likely your biggest bathroom expense (and waste stream).
Ask yourself:
- How many nappies per day? (Scary, right?)
- What are your pads made of?
- For period products: do you know what's in them? Anything potentially toxic?
Soap, Shampoo, Deodorant
The daily essentials that pile up fast in big households.
Ask yourself:
- How often do you replace these? (Monthly? Weekly?)
- How are they packaged? Can these be easily recycled, or do they contain elements that make it harder (pumps, soft tubes, etc.)?
- Are there concentrated or refill versions available?
The Verdict
Spend 5 minutes actually looking at what you buy, how often, and what it costs. That's your baseline. From there, you can ask: Is there a better way? Not perfect: better.
Because the scariest thing about bathroom habits isn't what's in your cabinet. It's not knowing what's in your cabinet.
